What is the right way of saying that you put a bedsheet on a mattress. Do you put it on, lay it on or spread it on a mattress? If it’s neither of the 3 please tell me what is the right word. I’m confused m. Thanks!

  • In the UK any of your three verbs would be fine. 'Spread' is perhaps the most descriptive of the three, but I don't think it's used more often than the others. Oddly, the complete operation of putting sheets and blankets or duvet on a bed is called 'making the bed'.

  • Thanks for your answer! I’ve heard all 3 being used that’s what was confusing me about which one is the most widely used. Isn’t making a bed generally used when your bed is already made but messed up like in the morning and you just straighten everything out. I wanted to know what you use when there’s nothing on the mattress.

  • You're quite right: 'making the bed' can be used either for 'starting from scratch' with clean sheets or for mere straightening.

    – Philip Wood

  • You can also make up the bed when it's being done from scratch: "We can make up the bed in the spare room if you want to spend the night."
