Геоложкият еон е термин за обозначаване на период от време. Той е най-голямото подразделяне на геохроноложката скала. Еоните са определени на базата на някакво забележимо събитие в историята на Земята. Например еонът фанерозой е започнал преди около 550 млн. години и обхваща периода след появата на живи организми с твърда черупка.


Един еон се разделя на няколко ери. Геоложките ери от своя страна се делят на периоди, а геоложките периоди се сътоят от епохи.


До скоро съществуваха само два еона – фанерозой и докамбрий. Бившите ери на докамбрия: хадей, архай и протерозой се считат за самостоятелни еони.


Сега ние живеем в еон фанерозой, ера ценозой, период кватернер и епоха холоцен.
