Is there a difference, however small, between iron cross and cross of iron? Or are they the exact same phrase but just worded differently? To me, iron cross sounds like a Germanic construction while cross of iron sounds more like a Romance one. I don't know if I'm wrong, but I want to know if there's a different connotation between the two.

They technically mean the same thing, although "cross of iron" seems a bit more flowery. I can't think of it being used conversationally, but it could definitely appear in the written word.
